PArtners & Collaborators
University of Maryland
The University of Maryland is integrating the Index in functional areas across the campus including the A. James Clark School of Engineering. Serving more than 3,800 undergraduates, the school welcomes innovators who seek collaborative, hands-on learning, and offers them the resources to become the engaged problem solvers that can remake society for the better.
CELO is partnering with the Clark School to support ClarkLEAD (their signature onboarding program) and enhance the quality and impact of STEM education. Through this collaboration, students develop leadership skills and shared values of diversity and inclusion through the ClarkLEAD onboarding experience.
The Allstate Foundation
In support of The Allstate Foundation‘s youth empowerment strategy, the Center for Expanding Leadership & Opportunity (CELO) has partnered with them to (re)define youth service for a new generation and empower youth to serve and improve communities.
This strategy includes a three-pronged approach:
- A cross-sector convening that will generate a new definition and model of service for contemporary society co-created by youth, scholars, and service-centered organizations (Campus Compact, National Association of Secondary School Principals, City Year),
- Creation of policy reports guiding the future of youth service and a national campaign to drive uptake, and
- The dissemination of over $1 million in grant funding to support youth-led, youth-driven service initiatives at institutions of higher education.

Aspen Challenge Program
Launched in a new U.S. city each year, the Aspen Challenge begins with a forum for students and teachers from partner high schools. Equipped with tools and support, teams then design a solution to their selected challenge. Twelve weeks later, they present their solutions on stage in a daylong competition, and teams are selected to advance and showcase their work.
CELO provides Aspen Challenge and a number of other programs with comprehensive assessment services including longitudinal impact evaluations. Aspen Challenge leverages the Index to provide feedback to their teachers / coaches for professional development, and integrates data from their use of the Index to increase their program’s impact on student outcomes.
California Polytechnic State University
California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) currently serves 21,000 students and is leveraging the Index on an institution-wide level. The institution is distributing the Index to all incoming first-year students as part of their Promise Project and Cal Poly Now Paths.
Cal Poly is using the Index, coupled with Student Affairs department-specific thematic paths, to connect students to the learning experiences offered on their campus in five areas of experiential learning: connecting, engaging, thriving, belonging, and exploring.
Cobell Scholarship Fund
The Cobell Scholarship aims to provide elevated opportunities for Native college students through empowering them with an impactful scholarship and networking experience designed to support their success in higher education and positively transform communities.
CELO is collaborating with Indigenous Education, Inc. and the Cobell Scholarship to develop curriculum focused on leadership development that is culturally responsive to Indigenous experiences. The program is utilizing the Index to support scholars, fellows, and alumni in meaning-making and action planning toward strengthening leadership capacities.
Irvine Valley College
Irvine Valley College (IVC) is one of California’s leading community colleges, providing over 15,000 students with exceptional educational opportunities. Irvine Valley College (IVC) has the highest rate of students transferring to four-year schools out of all 116 community colleges in the state.
CELO is partnering with Irvine Valley College in distributing the Index across campus, and in collaboration with the Allstate Foundation to allocate grants for youth-led service and leadership opportunities on campus.Â
Partnering with CELO has supported the development of a tangible framework to advance access to, and the quality of, student developmental experiences at Irvine Valley College. Our partnership with CELO has been a catalyst for broadening interpretations of service and leadership for our students, including community service, leadership, engagement, and extracurricular opportunities.Â
